Qualification: Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology
Host Business: Bridge Toyota
RTO: Charles Darwin University
"I chose to start this apprenticeship with Bridge Toyota and GTNT Group because I have always been interested in motor races. I would go to car racing events and see people fixing their team’s car and would think to myself 'One day I want to learn everything they know.' "
Benjamin Perez pursued his mechanical apprenticeship because of his long-standing passion for motors. The biggest benefit for Benjamin during his time with Bridge Toyota has been the family-like environment. From his first day, the team has supported him in gaining the confidence and skills needed to work on vehicles to Toyota’s high standards. Benjamin has come a long way, from initially being hesitant and uncertain to now being able to run express bays and confidently work on repairs.
What impact did your studies/work have on your life?
My partner's dad is also a mechanic and hearing him talk about cars and what he would do as a mechanic in Darwin has played a major part in spiking my interest in this apprenticeship, being able to impress him with the knowledge that I have learned thanks to this apprenticeship.
I've had many highlights working with Bridge Toyota and the biggest highlight I can say is the family I’ve now been accepted into. Since the first day, they have welcomed me and helped me gain the confidence needed to work on cars on my own.
I still remember the first time I was told to do a service on a car and being so worried to even touch it without someone watching over me to make sure I do it correctly. Now I help run express bays and have done major repairs on cars on my own with minimal help needed. I know it's been a crazy day when I come home smelling like fuel and covered in grease and oil!
