“Being a chippy has impacted and changed me in many ways, it has made me become a better man. Since starting my apprenticeship, it has made it easier to communicate with people and put myself out there.”
I am a 4th year SBA apprentice that has moved over to full time to complete my apprenticeship. The reason why I wanted to be a chippy was because I love doing tasks hands on and I have always been building little things since I was young.
I completed all of my trade school with HIA while a school-based apprentice.
What impact did your studies/work have on your life?
Being a chippy has impacted and changed me in many ways it has made me become a better man since starting my apprenticeship, it has made it become easier to communicate with people and put myself out there. I have also got to meet people that I would call my mates. I have brought a positive attitude and am always keen to learn and better myself.
Working in a team setting is a better way to learn things and meet new people and makes work a lot more enjoyable, when you can work with each other instead of by yourself. Some good traits to have to make a positive impression is to be keen and eager to learn and communicate with your peers.
Some challenges I have faced is not knowing what to do in certain circumstances and tasks but eventually I found out that it’s not that hard to ask a question if you are unsure and that has made learning tasks easier. I have had to use my skills is when I removed my mum’s old tiles and did some demolition to help her with renovations. I would describe the quality of my training good, as I am always ready and keen to learn new things.
