The experience motivates her to further her knowledge and study biomedical science at university in 2023.

What impact did your studies/work have on your life?

After graduated high school in 2021, I decided to do a traineeship because I thought that it would be a good opportunity for me to get some hands-on experience in health and be exposed to a variety of health disciplines.

Health has always been an interest of mine and I’ve always found bacteria and other microorganisms fascinating so this traineeship was an opportunity that I definitely could not miss. Through my traineeship I’ve learnt a lot about tropical diseases here in Darwin. I’ve had the chance to work within the melioidosis team at Menzies, which has given me plenty of insight to how the bacteria that causes melioidosis grows, the type of conditions it thrives in and how it can impact the body.

Doing this traineeship has helped me decide what I would like to study at university in 2023 and the type of career I’d like for myself in the future.

In 2023 I’ve enrolled to study biomedical science as I’m still unsure on whether I want to be a researcher or a paediatrician but thought this would be a good first step. As someone who enjoys learning, throughout my traineeship I’ve been very hands on with everything that my supervisors have tasked me to do even if it wasn’t lab related.

Aside from the lab work I’ve been able to help my workplace with other things such as health promotion and community outreach. Being in the Biyamarr Ma program I’ve been surrounded by like-minded people who all want to work within health, so it’s been very inspiring for me to grow with my peers and colleagues.
