National Apprentice Employment Network: MEDIA RELEASE
Mentoring program a much-needed help for apprentices and employers
The National Apprentice Employment Network (NAEN) today welcomed the $60 million injection of federal government funding into new mentoring and support services for apprentices.
The Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Karen Andrews announced the new Industry Specialist Mentoring for Australian Apprentices (ISMAA) program funding, which will assist apprentices in industries undergoing structural change.
Minister Andrews announced the 24 organisations that have been selected to deliver the mentoring service, which will provide intensive support for apprentices during the first two years of training.
The National Executive Officer of NAEN, Lauren Tiltman, welcomed the announcement and congratulated the organisations selected to deliver the service.
“The group training network is particularly pleased that the value of mentoring and support services are being recognised for the valuable part they play in apprentice progression and completion.
“Mentoring services are the bread and butter of group training organisations who work each day with apprentices, trainees and host businesses to overcome difficulties and improve the likelihood of completion.
“We are delighted that the group training sector is well represented in the program and confident that their longstanding expertise in this area will benefit the apprentices, trainees and host businesses.
“The focus on apprentices in industries experiencing structural change, as well as those who may be vulnerable, is extremely important.
“We know from experience that early intervention to address problems in the apprenticeship provides the best chance of success and increases the likelihood of a positive outcome for apprentices and employers,” Ms Tiltman said.
