Host Business of the Month - GEMCO
GEMCO have been partnered with GTNT since 2005 and been active in hosting apprentices since at their manganese mine located on Groote Eylandt. GEMCO is one of the biggest low-cost manganese mines in the world and it contains high-grade ore. It has its own port facilities located at Milner Bay, just 16 kilometers from the mine site.
Currently GEMCO host three apprentices – Bantry Croft, Benjamin Martin and Mary Coulter, and have over the years trained approximately fifty apprentices.
Bantry is completing his Certificate III in Electro-technology Electrician and is ready to sit his final capstone exam. Benjamin commenced his Certificate III in Electro-technology Electrician in November 2014 and has recently also commenced his Certificate III in Instrumentation and Control. Benjamin has been a finalist at the GTNT Awards and the Master Builders Association NT Excellence in Building and Construction awards in 2017 and 2018.
Both Bantry and Benjamin complete their off-the-job training through block release at Charles Darwin University. First year Electrical apprentice, Mary Coulter has recently commenced with GEMCO to complete her Certificate III in Electro-technology Electrician apprenticeship.
Mary commenced with GTNT in February 2018 under the Power Career Program. The Power Career Program is an apprenticeship employment initiative being offered in collaboration between GTNT as the employer and Charles Darwin University (CDU) providing the structured training component. Funding for the Power Careers Program has been provided by the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation – Workforce NT Division.
