Alex Holton chose to pursue an apprenticeship to develop his knowledge of the automotive industry and gain experience he could use in his personal life as well.
He finds the apprenticeship pathway to be a great way to be hands-on, learn, and earn at the same time. As the only 3rd year apprentice in Bridge Toyota’s Darwin workshop, Alex has been given the opportunity to mentor the 1st and 2nd year apprentices.
Alex was a finalist for Most Outstanding Apprentice – Stage 3, and received the Hot100 Rising Star Commendation Award at the GTNT Group Awards held earlier this year.
What impact did your studies/work have on your life?
I chose the apprenticeship pathway to gain self-development and knowledge about the automotive industry. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain work place experience and be hands on but also learn and get paid at the same time.
At Bridge Toyota, I am currently the only 3rd year apprentice within the Darwin workshop. This has given me the opportunity to be a mentor to the 1st and 2nd year apprentices by demonstrating to them the skills and knowledge I have gained over time and experience within the industry.
Being given this opportunity has been beneficial to my learning as well as I have had to take the time to make sure I am being precise with all the information and demonstrations I am passing on. This has increased my attention to detail and ability to break down and explain each step of each job that we do. This has also built my confidence as I feel the service managers and mechanics are entrusting me to pass on my skills to other people which makes me feel valued as part of the team.

You also receive mentoring and support whilst undergoing study to ensure you have the knowledge and understanding behind why tasks are done the way they are when working on a vehicle.
